What is an Autism Assessment?

An adult autism assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand how you think, communicate, experience relationships, and process the world around you. This type of testing pertains to evaluating one’s social communication and interaction patterns, sensory experiences, focused interests, and rigid behaviours.

Many adults seek assessment after years of feeling “different,” experiencing burnout, being misdiagnosed, or recognizing autistic traits in themselves. The assessment process can provide clarity for years of misunderstanding.

Adults who seek autism assessments often have always felt socially out of sync, experience sensory sensitivities, feel exhausted from masking or camouflaging, prefer structure and predictability, have intense or specialized interests, have been previously diagnosed with anxiety, ADHD, or depression, but feel this does not fully explain their experiences, and/or are exploring identity and self-understanding later in life.

The process involves a 90-minute clinical interview with the psychologist, a one-hour in-person autism behaviour test called the ADOS-2, a formal interview done with a parent/caregiver called the ADI-R, a 90-minute cognitive test, and completion of questionnaires. The final portion of the process is a feedback session to review the outcome of the information provided.

How Does an Autism Assessment Work in Calgary or Online?

Clinical interview:

A detailed developmental interview will explore early childhood development (communication, play, friendships, sensory experiences), school experiences, social communication patterns, repetitive behaviors or focused interests, sensory sensitivities and current functioning in work, relationships, and daily life.

90-minute Cognitive Test:

A cognitive test to evaluate strengths and weaknesses in verbal processing, problem solving, working memory, and processing speed.

ADOS-2 and ADI:

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured interaction that evaluates social communication, reciprocity, and behavioral patterns. The Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI-R) is structured developmental interview (when a caregiver is available).

Rating Scales and Observations:

Executive functioning self-report rating scales and possible feedback from other individuals in the person's life are used to evaluate social-related challenges and behavioral functioning.

Analysis and Report:

After compiling all data, a detailed report is prepared with diagnostic findings and treatment recommendations.

Review and Treatment Plan:
