What Is Couples & Family Counselling?

Couples & Family Counselling involves a collaborative and therapeutic approach to address relationship challenges. It is a process where couples or other family members work with a therapist to explore issues, understand their dynamics, enhance communication and deepen their bond. This therapy is not just about resolving conflicts solely as the conflict is often the symptom of an underlying issue. Couples therapy focuses on understanding each other’s perspectives, developing deeper connections for each other and building a more resilient partnership. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is the primary modality Assured Psychology uses for couples & family counselling. The Gottman approach is also used at times.

How Does Couples Counselling Work in Calgary?

Initial Session:

The initial session focuses on understanding the dynamics, challenges & history of your relationship with all members present at the first session. Sessions typically take 60- 75 minutes.

Individual Attachment Interview:

Each member of the couple meets with therapist 1-1 to review their attachment history & their perspective on the relationship.

Regular Couples or Family Sessions:

Regular, ongoing therapy for the couple to address their issues of disconnection & conflict. Couples should consider weekly or bi-weekly counselling for 4-8 months then reassess, as a recommendation.  After those are addressed the therapy moves into deepening their connection & repairing emotional injuries.

Wrapping up:

Once couples or families have completed therapy, a session is spent concluding their process and includes relapse-prevention planning.

What should we do if our relationship is in crisis, including pending separation or after an affair?

While it is best to begin couples counselling before the relationship has gotten to the point of crisis, this is a common starting point for many couples. This includes after an affair has occurred or once someone has begun to seriously consider ending the relationship. If both partners are willing to do therapy, we offer help. In these cases it is best to commit to “the work” with regular weekly couple’s therapy sessions pre-booked for several months. A couple’s retreat and readings such as Sue Johnson’s Hold Me Tight can support your progress as well.

Couples Or Family Counselling

How To Access Couples or Family Counselling in Calgary & Online

Relationships are one of the most important, rewarding and complicated parts of life. When your relationship is doing well, life seems to be easier. When your relationship is struggling, life can be very difficult, particularly at home. There is substantial evidence that shows relationships impact not only your mental and emotional well-being but also your physical health, career and overall satisfaction in life. It is, in fact, one of the main determinants of how happy people feel overall in their lives.

We use an empirically-validated, highly effective approach to couples therapy called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). Following years of development and fine-tuning, this approach has proven highly effective in helping couples work their way out of despair, disconnection & conflict. We work hard to help you move towards a closer, bonding, loving relationship.

Couples in Calgary can access our counselling services through various flexible options, including in-office sessions or online through telehealth platforms. This flexibility ensures that all couples, regardless of their schedule or location, can benefit and access from our services.

We offer in-person appointment in Calgary, and online appointment anywhere in Alberta, the Yukon, Nunavut, and Nova Scotia.

Badger and Turtle Face the Storm:

A book that helps families connect

Badger and Turtle Face the Storm follows a pair of friends who learn to work together under stress. This book is meant for not only children to enjoy, but as a tool for families to better understand a common, hurtful pattern that can occur, particularly between parents. By better understanding this pattern, it allows someone to be able to change it more easily, resulting in a positive impact on the home environment.
