What is a Gifted Assessment?
A gifted assessment involves a standardized evaluation of an individual’s cognitive abilities (and academic achievement, if desired) to see if they demonstrate significantly advanced intellectual potential compared to their same-aged peers and help support their learning, motivation, and personal adjustment. Most often, gifted assessments are pursued to support school/educational programming and placement decisions (i.e., admission requirements for a specific school or gifted program). Some schools/programs require only cognitive testing, while others may require both cognitive and academic testing as part of their admission requirements. Individuals/families may also pursue a gifted assessment to develop a better understanding of how advanced abilities affect learning processes, motivation, academic performance, and overall experience.
If additional concerns and/or broader questions related to learning, attention, regulation, or mental health are present, or emerge through the assessment process, psychologists will work collaboratively with families/individuals to determine whether a more comprehensive psychoeducational assessment may be beneficial.
How Does a Gifted Assessment Work?
Initial Consultation:
Psychologists provide an initial consultation to review goals, ensure the assessment type (i.e., cognitive vs cognitive and academic) matches questions to be answered, and outline process.
Evaluation:
Psychologists complete an intake interview with parent/guardian to review consent and gather relevant background information. Individual testing will follow to explore cognitive functioning (and possibly academic functioning). This will range from 2-4 hours, depending on the individual and type of gifted assessment requested.
Data Analysis:
Psychologists thoroughly review & analyze the gathered data to form an accurate understanding of an individual’s cognitive (and possibly academic) functioning.
Report Generation:
A brief written report is generated outlining assessment results and recommendations for supporting an individual’s cognitive (and possibly academic) profile.
Feedback Session:
A follow-up session is conducted with the parent/guardian (and/or individual) to discuss the assessment results, recommendations for support, and next steps.
